Boosted by a surge in some of the world’s leadingeconomies and by scrap prices which have
remained at high levels for more than two years,
there was a general feeling of optimism among both
recyclers and machine manufacturers at last
month’s ISRI Convention and Exposition in New
Orleans.
Driven by heavy scrap demand, notably from
China and India, the industry is currently in good
shape, although some experts continued to issue
warnings about the distorting effect of hedge fund
intervention. The current sky-high prices of notably
nickel and copper no longer bear any relation to the
fundamentals, they said.
However, the majority of ISRI delegates opted to
wear pink glasses and to adopt a rosy view of the
world of recycling.

Convention Center in Las Vegas.
Design for recycling award for EPA
For more than two decades, the Institute of Scrap
Recycling Industries, Inc. (ISRI) has promoted
Design for Recycling, a voluntary programme that
encourages manufacturers to give full consideration
to end-of-life recyclability in the earliest stages of
product design. And during its latest convention in
New Orleans, the organisation bestowed its Design
for Recycling award on the US Environmental
Agency’s Design for the Environment program.
The EPA programme was chosen because of its
overall leadership in creating innovative design
partnerships, and its dedication to empower busi-
nesses and industry sectors to incorporate environ-
mental considerations, along with performance and
cost considerations, into decision-making processes.
‘EPA’s Design for the Environment and ISRI’s
Design for Recycling share the vision that it takes
voluntary programmes to produce changes in man-
ufacturing processes that consider a product’s end-
of-life during the design stage,’ said ISRI Chair
Frank Cozzi.
EPA Administrator Steven Johnson expressed
gratitude for being honoured with the Design for
Recycling Award. ‘We are proud to partner with
ISRI on efforts like the National Vehicle Mercury
Switch Recovery Program and developing best man-
agement practices for electronics recycling,’ he said.
Design for the Environment (DfE) is one of EPA’s
premier partnership programmes, working with
individual industry sectors to compare and improve
performance to the benefit of human health and the
minimisation of environmental risks. DfE partner-

Family fright
A woman was sick of her husband’s drinking so she decided to teach him a lesson.
She dressed up like Satan, and when her husband returned home from another bender, she
jumped out from behind the sofa and screamed in his face.
The man just looked at the Devil and calmly said: ‘You don’t scare me, I married your sister.’
