Coolrec PHB, a subsidiary of the Netherlands’ leading
waste management group Van Gansewinkel, has just
opened a brand new site that will become the corporate
‘hub’ for plastics collection, sorting and processing. Cool-
rec’s director Arjen Wittekoek has all the details.
Dr Gunter Pauli is an entrepreneur and the author of the
book ‘The Blue Economy’. He is the inspiration and ini-
tiator behind some 200 sustainability projects launched
around the globe. Recycling International meets up with
a man who believes recyclers are doing something wrong.
The volume of palladium reclaimed from automotive scrap
could grow to 2 million ounces this year – the equivalent
of around 30% of annual new primary supply. And the
amount of platinum sourced from this same stream could
increase by as much as 15% this year to 1.27 million
ounces, according to A-1 Specialized Services & Supplies.
The phrase heard most often throughout the latest Inter-
national Electronics Recycling Congress was ‘circular
economy’. Many speakers attending the event in the
Austrian city of Salzburg expressed support for the prin-

By 2020, India’s middle-class popula-
tion will have reached 200 million and
is thought likely to accelerate towards
475 million by 2030. But a prosperous
outlook for the country’s scrap metal
industry, among others, can be fully
realised only once some major chal-
lenges have been resolved, including
a complex customs duty structure, a
lack of supportive legislation and,
perhaps most urgently, the import
duty on metal scrap, as highlighted at the latest international conference organ-
ised by the Metal Recycling Association of India.
