Genesis Attachments’ latest
addition to its XP Series of
mobile shears is laying claim to
the title of the world’s largest
mobile shear.
Currently employed in a US East
Coast shipbreaking operation, the
GXP 2500R provides more than
3000 short tons of cutting force at
5000 psi. It is designed to fit excava-
tors in the 200 000 lb-plus range, or
240 000 lb-plus for the rotating model.
Weighing in at 53 000 lb or 45 000 lb
for non-rotating models, the GXP
2500R features a 48-inch jaw depth
and a jaw opening of 46 inches.
The design is intended to increase
productivity while reduing mainte-
nance demands, according to the
manufacturer.
All Genesis XP Series shears fea-
ture a longer cylinder stroke and
lever arm which provides a 10%
boost in power at the throat and
piercing tip, as well as a 20% in-
crease in shear force at the location
of the new offset apex where the
majority of cutting actually occurs.
Central to the XP’s success is its
patented bolt-on piercing tip which
dramatically reduces costly build-up
and welding-related downtime. The
XP shear’s full piercing tip assembly
is designed and manufactured from
proprietary steel that has been field-
proven to last two to four times
longer than traditional piercing tips.
Since the full tip assembly can be re-
placed with eight bolts, XP shear
users can be back at work in as little
as 30 minutes, argues Genesis.
The company has already
accepted four orders for the
GXP 2500R, including one
for the US East Coast and
one for export.

SEDA’s Airbag Master
Today’s luxury cars contain up to
17 pyrotechnic devices also known
as detonating caps. The problem fac-
ing dismantlers is how safely to re-
move or deactivate these devices be-
fore the ELV is sent to the shredder
or crusher, as required by the EU’s
ELV directive. Currently, most dis-
mantlers remove airbags and store
them for collection or disposal at a
later date.
SEDA’s new Airbag Master can
be connected to an ELV using a 25-
pin SUD-D socket. A hand-held, box-
shaped control panel with 24 LEDs
illuminates a single light for every
airbag present in the vehicle such
that, for example, a car with six
airbags will cause six green lights to
become illuminated.
Once the operator is satisfied that
the connection has been made and
the correct number of LEDs are lit,
he pushes buttons on the control
panel and airbags are individually
detonated at intervals of approxi-
mately one second. Upon activation,
the green light is replaced with a red
one. The green light remains lit
should an airbag fail to activate,
thereby indicating to the operator
that he must investigate the reason
for the failed detonation or remove
the device manually.
Supporting both alternating and
direct current, the Airbag Master
also comes with a universal cable, al-
lowing the dismantler to deploy
pyrotechnic devices without the
need to purchase a specific adaptor.
According to SEDA, the Airbag Mas-
ter is the only official airbag activat-
ing device available and is recom-
mended by European, US and
Japanese car manufacturers in their
dismantling guidelines.

Debut for the world’s largest mobile shear
SEDA-Environmental of Kössen in Austria – Europe’s leading manu-
facturer of depollution and recycling equipment for end-of-life vehi-
cles (ELVs) – has developed the Airbag Master for easy removal or
deactivation of air bags by car dismantlers.
Spectro, one of the world’s leading
experts in optical emission and XRF
spectroscopy devices, has launched
Spectromaxx. The new analyser is
hailed as ‘a next generation spec-
trometer that sets the standard for
the rapid analysis of all common ele-
ments in metals’. The Spectromaxx is
‘faster, more precise, offers increased
flexibility and requires less mainte-
nance’ than predecessors, the compa-
ny states. The spectrometer analyses
nitrogen levels in steel down to a level
of 20ppm. An Argon Saver Mode is
claimed to reduce argon costs by 40
to 60% depending on sample
throughput. ICAL, Spectro’s patent-
ed intelligent calibration logic, is also
fitted as standard to monitor system
integrity and eliminate the need for
recalibration samples. The Spectro-
maxx also features expanded element
selection and calibration ranges, as
well as a unique readout system
which shaves seconds off analysis
time. The Spectromaxx is available
as either a bench-top or floor unit to
cater for flexible work-flow and space
requirements. It offers fast access to
service/maintenance points and is de-
signed for comfortable operation at
high sample throughput rates.
