The European Union will ban cadmium in jewellery
and all plastics from December 2011. It says consumers,
including children, risk exposure to cadmium through
skin contact or through licking. Cadmium is carcino-
genic, and toxic in the aquatic environment.
Besides plastics and jewellery, the cadmium ban also
covers brazing sticks, which are used to join dissimilar
materials, as fumes that are released during this pro-
cess are highly dangerous if inhaled. The ban will be
listed in Annex XVII of the Reach Regulation.
The new legislation prohibits cadmium in all plastic prod-
ucts while encouraging the recovery of PVC waste for use
in construction products. As PVC is a valuable material
that can be recovered a number of times, the new legisla-
tion allows the reuse of recovered PVC containing low
levels of cadmium in a limited number of construction
products, which it is not believed endanger the public or
the environment. Construction products made of this
recovered PVC will be marketed with a specifi c logo.
Since alternatives became available, the European PVC
industry decided to phase out cadmium from all PVC
as part of its Vinyl 2010 programme. The use of cad-
mium in batteries and electronics has been restricted
since 2004.

Kiss and tell
A woman spends US$ 15 000 on a face-lift
for her 50th birthday and feels pretty good
about the results. On her way home, she
stops at a news stand to buy a newspaper and
asks the man who serves her: ‘How old do
you think I am?’ ‘32,’ comes the reply.’ ‘Nope!
I’m exactly 50,’ the woman says happily. A
little while later, she goes into McDonald’s
and asks the counter girl the very same
question. The girl replies: ‘I’d guess about 29.’
The woman replies with a big smile: ‘Nope,
I’m 50.’
Now she’s feeling really good about herself.
So while waiting for the bus home, she asks
the old man next to her the very same
question. He replies: ‘Lady, I’m 78 and my
eyesight is going. But I reckon if you give me
a big kiss, I’ll tell you exactly how old you
are.’ Intrigued, the woman allows the old
man to give her a passionate kiss before
asking: ‘So how old am I?’ ‘50,’ he says with
certainty. Stunned, she asks: ‘But how could
you possibly know that just by kissing me?’
‘I didn’t,’ the man replies. ‘I was behind you
in McDonalds.’

Dutch waste management and recycling group
Van Gansewinkel is assisting a bike manufacturer, the
Gazelle Group, in devising a 100% recycled bicycle.
Through this collaboration, the parties will explore how
recycled material from old bicycles can be used in the
production of new bikes. Van Gansewinkel and Gazelle
are also studying the potential for reverse logistics of
old bicycles.
A preliminary analysis by Van Gansewinkel suggests that
a minimum of 91% of old bike parts is recyclable; in the
Netherlands alone, more than 1.1 million new bikes are
sold each year, meaning that approximately 20 million
kg of plastics and metals are potentially recyclable.
To date, new bikes sold in the Netherlands have been
made largely from newly-sourced materials, especially
metals and plastics. By recycling discarded bicycles, the
partners say they will stimulate raw material availabil-
ity. To this collaborative effort, Van Gansewinkel Group
brings its expertise in materials, recycling techniques
and return logistics systems. The company will also opti-
mise the waste management process at Gazelle produc-
tion sites. www.vangansewinkelgroep.com
