Electronic scrap shredder takes care of business
Two cabins
Founded in 2002 and employing more than 100
people, EKAN takes delivery of e-scrap which
is initially picked up by grapples and then
transported on conveyor belts to the funnel of
the shredder with its 2000 x 1200 mm opening.
After the scrap has been ‘gently’ shredded, a
magnet separates the iron material. Then, the
various materials are sorted manually.
In the cabin to which the iron pieces are sent,
employees sort out the valuable materials such
as copper while the remaining and intact resid-
ual iron is pressed and directed to a melting
process. In a second cabin, specialists sort
mixed material to remove free and intact pol-
lutants such as batteries, mercury, condensers
and other materials such as cables or stainless
steel components. These sorting cabins are con-
nected at a higher level so that workers can
simply throw collected materials into their
respective containers via openings in the floor.
No escape of pollutants
After the manual sorting process, the
remaining materials land in a screening sta-
tion with an integrated separation system.
Here, the small mixed and type-sorted plas-
tics, non-ferrous metal mixes, copper and
stainless steel parts and also broken glass are
separated. A granulator then shreds the
material to a pre-defined size so that the plas-
tics and metals can be easily and automati-
cally sorted through a second sorting system.
‘This ensures that no valuable materials are
lost,’ notes George Tzinis, EKAN’s Head of
Engineering. ‘We have also been able to
ensure that no pollutants escape into the
environment.’ The valuable materials col-
lected in this way – in particular, the copper
and also the gold, silver and palladium – are
sold to specialist companies which use them
in making parts for new electrical appli-
ances.
