Caterpillar updates integrated tool-carrier
Caterpillar has made changes to
its IT38G Series II Integrated Tool-
carrier to enhance versatility and
productivity, as well as to provide
excellent visibility in demanding job-
site situations.
The US company has evaluated
component placements and re-rout-
ed hydraulic lines to increase the op-
erator viewing area. The wheel
loader-based machine has been re-
designed to provide lines of sight to
the quick coupler and work tools.
The machine includes a 180 HP
(134 kW) engine, parallel lift link-
ages and integral quick couplers to
handle a wide range of material han-
dling and digging tasks. Caterpillar
has expanded the range of bucket ca-
pacities available with the IT38G II
from 2.3-2.4 cubic metres to 2.2-2.8
cubic metres. A broader selection of
buckets enables customers to match
material density and bucket size
more closely for optimum productivi-
ty, according to the company.
Prior to the update, the IT38G Se-
ries II had the quick coupler pins ac-
tuated by a third lever and delivered
pressure to move the coupler pins
through a third valve. The machine
now boasts an electro-hydraulic sys-
tem for the quick coupler which is
activated by a switch in the cab and
delivers pressure to the coupler
through the brake system. This
change expands work tool capabili-
ties, says Caterpillar, because the
third lever and valve are now avail-
able for additional work tool func-
tionality, such as a top clamp or a
roll-out bucket.

The Weima Group equipment
manufacturing operation based at
Ilsfeld in Germany has developed a
new version of its WLK 12 single-
shaft shredder for the size reduction
of bulky plastic containers and parts
with thin-gauge wall thicknesses –
including barrels, drums and tanks.
The machine includes a new press-
down device that enables the shred-
ding of large size loads without the
need for pre-cutting.
The new single-shaft shredder
has a working width of 1200 mm and
is equipped with a ‘dog-house’ design
hopper that opens over the top of the
rotor. Intermediate bulk containers
and other materials in sizes up to 1
cubic metre are loaded directly into
the front of the machine. A horizon-
tal ram pushes the material into the
rotor parallel to the downstroke of
the press-down device.
According to the manufacturer,
the pressing actions are managed by
electronic controls that ‘read’ the amp
load on the main motor and optimise
the pressure applied to the 368 mm
V-rotor. When the processed material
is small enough, it passes through a
screen mounted under the rotor.

Herbold Meckesheim has intro-
duced a new ZSR series shredder for
processing large-diameter reject
pipes. According to the German
manufacturer, this circular shredder
offers a high throughput perfor-
mance and is capable of handling
long pipes without preliminary cut-
ting.
Reject pipes are deposited in a
horizontal charging trough which is
equipped with a feed device on the
front which pushes the material
against an inclined disk rotor armed
with special cutting tools. This rotor
cuts the material into thick-walled
chips which then proceed to a mill
for further cutting.
Typical granulate size after pre-
liminary shredding is approximately
50-100 mm, says Herbold.
