The main feature of the machine, which shreds up to
600 kg of waste cartridges per hour, is that the toner
powder mixed with inert powder as a non-explosive
output fraction is separated from all other materials
such as steel, aluminium and plastics, all of which can
also be separately recovered and sold into their respec-
tive scrap markets.
The inert powder can be used in the production of
bitumen (asphalt binder) or consigned to an inert
waste landfill. The machine is operational in Spectra-
Media’s plant near Zagreb, where it has processed
300 tonnes of waste toner cartridges since becoming
operational this June. The first delivery of the machine
to a customer abroad is expected in the spring of 2016.
‘Used printing toner components from printers, fax
machines and similar devices contain environmentally
harmful substances,’ Spectra-Media points out.
‘Therefore, it is very important that the toner cartridges
are not discarded in municipal waste, but separated
from other waste and treated by an authorised
recycling company.’
The e-scrap recycler started operations in 1985 and
became Croatia’s exclusive recycling and recovery
service for e-scrap in 2007.
Croatian waste electrical and electronics equipment (WEEE) recycler Spectra-Media
has designed a waste laser toner cartridge recycling solution based on non-explosive
technology that is claimed to represent a completely new approach in this field.
A new reality: non-explosive toner cartridge recycling
