Caterpillar’s new T-Series track-
type tractors – the D8T, D9T and
D10T – are powered by Cat
engines with ACERT technology
that meet EPA Tier 3 and
European Union Stage IIIa
exhaust emission regulations.
All three engines feature an en-
gine controller which manages fuel
delivery and air flow. This monitors
engine and machine conditions while
keeping the engine operating at peak
efficiency. The controller allows the
engine to respond quickly to chang-
ing application needs and provides
maximum performance per litre of
fuel. The D8T uses a 15-litre C15 en-
gine (347 gross hp, 259 kW); the D9T
an 18-litre C18 engine (464 gross hp,
346 kW); and the D10T a 27-litre
C27 engine (646 gross hp, 482 kW).
All three machines employ an
electronically-controlled, heavy-duty
planetary power shift transmission
with three speeds forward and three
speeds reverse. They have large-di-
ameter, high-capacity, oil-cooled
clutches and an electronic modula-
tion system that allows the operator
to perform rapid changes in speed
and direction.
The operator stations on the new
tractors provide for significantly im-
proved comfort while many of the
units’ other features are designed to
achieve ease of operation and to
minimise downtime, according to
the manufacturer. The tractor main-
frames are built to absorb the high
impact shock loads and twisting
forces encountered in many applica-
tions, with durable structures, ele-
vated sprockets and suspended un-
dercarriages claimed to be among
the key strengths of these machines.
Maintenance and repair downtime
is minimised and servicing is faster
and easier, Caterpillar adds.

Positive material
identification with
TN Alloy Pro
Thermo Electron Corporation,
formerly Texas Nuclear, has
unveiled the new TN Alloy Pro –
described as the smallest PMI
(positive material identification)
machine in the world and capa-
ble of providing fast, reliable and
safe operation.
Designed for the inspection and
valuation of metal components, the
TN Alloy Pro uses X-ray fluorescence
(XRF) technology for precise identifi-
cation of metal alloy compositions.
The smallest and lightest XRF alloy
analyser on the market, it can pene-
trate a 2-inch diameter hole up to 4-
inches deep to enable inspection right
into the ultrasonic thickness gauge
holes that are blanketed by insula-
tion. The bright, colour display can be
seen easily during outside work or in-
side the receiving warehouse. The
display can pivot to any viewing an-
gle to permit uninterrupted work.
The TN Alloy Pro is an essential in-
spection and valuation device for a va-
riety of industries, according to Ther-
mo. It is said to have an unmatched
ergonomic design, while a simple soft-
ware program provides for ease of use
while allowing customisation and
flexibility. The non-destructive nature
of XRF does not create stress risers or
surface damage – critical for in-service
components, the company underlines.

Sims Group UK Ltd has been us-
ing Liebherr wheeled loading shovels
at Stratford upon Avon since 1993
and its first model – an L 531 – has
now completed a remarkable 31 000
hours of operation and is still work-
ing full ten-hour shifts, loading
trucks with fragmentised metals and
waste products. The performance of
this loader and the back-up provided
by Liebherr’s local field service engi-
neer has prompted Sims to specify
three further Liebherr L 544 wheeled
loading shovels, with the latest gen-
eration 2plus2 model joining the com-
pany’s materials handling fleet in
September.
Featuring hydrostatic drive, these
agile and versatile articulated load-
ers are well suited to a site where
working space is at a premium. The
L 544 loaders are predominantly
used to load saleable product into
trucks, while also loading unusable
waste materials for transportation
to landfill sites.
