Bano Recycling
Italian shredder specialist Bano enjoyed a successful week at the Pollutec trade
show in Lyon this year. Another reason for celebration was that the company has
secured a contract with ‘a major’ company in the US aluminium sector. The exact
details of the deal remains ‘a secret’, but Bano revealed that the equipment will
start running in 2017. www.shredder-bano.com
ACC/EPA
The plastics division of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) has formed a new
partnership with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) aimed at promot-
ing sustainable materials management for plastics. They will work together to
lower disposal rates by tracking and promotion of activities that enable source
reduction, reuse, recycling and prevention. www.americanchemistry.com
Recylex
France-based lead, zinc and plastics recycler Recylex turned in a ‘solid’ production
performance over the first nine months of 2016 despite the limited availability of
materials for recycling, according to chairman and ceo Yves Roche. The treatment
plants operated by Recylex SA in France and Harz-Metall GmbH in Germany
recycled 80 586 tonnes of scrap batteries – 14% less than in the same period of
2015. www.recylex.fr
Newell Recycling Equipment/C&G
US-based shredder major Newell Recycling Equipment (NRE) has become the
exclusive representative and distributor in North America for shear baler pro-
ducer C&G of northern Italy. ‘This partnership allows us to serve all scrap proces-
sors and not just the shredding industry,’ says NRE. www.newellequip.com
RecuLiner/Dow Corning
Dow Chemical subsidiary Dow Corning has entered a partnership with RecuLiner
– a Belgian company responsible for developing a recycling technology for convert-
ing paper release liner waste from self-adhesive labels into a range of end products
such as insulation material. www.reculiner.com
Michael Schuy
Michael Schuy, owner of the Germany-based Schuy Recycling company, has been
appointed as president of the European Recycling Industries’ Confederation
(EuRIC). In his inaugural speech, Schuy noted that EuRIC has a ‘pivotal role’ to
play in addressing the challenges that recyclers face in their day to day business
activities. He has cited excessive administrative burdens and unfair competition
from the public sector as important issues to work on.

More growth for US mobile
phone recycling sector
Revenue for the US mobile phone
recycling industry is estimated to reach
US$ 827.5 million over the five years to
2016, according to new data released by
IBISWorld. This represents an annualised
growth of 15.8% over the period.
Growth will slow this year to 11.4% as
declining copper prices reduce the
amount of revenue operators can obtain
for scrap material, the report states.
Despite falling commodity prices cutting
into the average industry profit margin
IBISWorld underlines that demand for
industry services has ‘risen steadily’ as
increasingly high-end consumer devices
have entered the industry and as con-
sumers with rising disposable incomes
tend to quickly upgrade to the newest
smartphones.
Regulations at the state level have sig-
nificantly benefited industry operators.
For example, in 2011 Utah passed a law
that requires companies to educate con-
sumers about locations where they can
recycle electronics. ‘As consumers become
more educated about electronic recycling,
the collection of electronics, including cell
phones, becomes easier,’ comments IBIS-
World Industry Analyst Madeline LeClair.
Consequently, IBISWorld expects recy-
cling industry revenue will continue
growing through 2021.
US recycler provides aid
to hurricane victims
Major US-based forklift supplier
Toyota Industrial Equipment Manufactur-
ing (TIEM) recently made a change to its
workers’ shirts and uniforms. But instead
of disposing of the used clothing in land-
fill, TIEM approached Wisdom Environ-
mental – a company that specialises in
the development of recycling pro-
grammes for businesses and industries.
As a result, the shirts and uniforms were
donated to the victims of Hurricane Mat-
thew who lost everything in the flooding
caused by a disaster which swept
through parts of the Caribbean and also
the south-eastern states of the USA. In
total, Wisdom Environmental provided
some 1000 kg of used clothing.
Wisdom Environmental works
with clients across the USA to
assist in recycling byproducts
from their manufacturing pro-
cesses. These clients range from
large automotive manufactur-
ers with multiple streams for
recycling to small, specialty
manufacturers with a single
stream.
