E-waste disposal
‘not yet mature’ in China
‘Driven by interests, e-waste recy-
cling processing with extremely severe
pollution is formed in many places of
China,’ a recent report by China
Research and Intelligence Co (CRI) has
claimed. The country’s e-waste disposal
industry is ‘not yet mature’, it adds.
China has been generating e-waste ‘at an
astonishing speed’ in recent years, CRI
states, citing a 2010 fi gure of 2.3 million
tonnes that makes it ‘the second largest
producing country of e-wastes world-
wide’; in fi rst place is the USA with 3 mil-
lion tonnes. Chinese volumes are likely to
snowball given that the country’s output
of electrical and electronic equipment
scaled new heights in 2011 of 320 million
computers, 120 million televisions and
105 million refrigerators.
In the next few years, the annual tally of
major waste electrical and electronic
products in China will pass 100 million
items. ‘It is expected that, by 2015, the
generating volume of China’s e-wastes
will be over 5 million tonnes,’ CRI
observes. Household appliances cur-
rently in use will soon ‘enter an outbreak
stage of replacement’.
At present, China counts more than 100
e-waste disposal enterprises, profits
from which are estimated to have
exceeded Yuan 3 billion (Euro 378 mil-
lion/US$ 481 million) this year. These are
able to recycle roughly 60 million items
of e-waste, thus yielding around
500 000 tonnes of secondary resources
such as metals, plastics and glass.
On a positive note, the report cites the
2009 implementation of the ‘old-for-new
policy’ of household appliances as a prime
example of continuous improvement
because this ‘accelerated the centralised
recycling and dismantling disposal of
e-waste’. www.cri-report.com
Novelis
World-leading aluminium specialist Novelis has broken ground on a US$ 250
million aluminium recycling and casting centre at its Nachterstedt plant in
Germany. Projected by the company to be ‘the world’s largest aluminium recycling
centre’, the new facility will be expected to produce up to 400 000 tonnes of
aluminium sheet ingot per year from recycled material. The plant will process
beverage cans as well as other types of aluminium scrap from across Europe.

Veolia ES Aurora
Veolia ES Aurora, a subsidiary of French-owned Veolia Environmental Services
UK, has signed a 25-year contract with Leeds City Council which will include the
building and running of a long-anticipated, waste-to-energy incinerator. The
state-of-art operation will target household waste and could save some £200
million (US$ 320 million) over 25 years in landfi ll taxes. Building work on the
facility is scheduled to start next summer and should be fully operational by 2016.

Pacifi c Steel and Recycling
As part of a bid to extend its reach to other regions of the state, Pacifi c Steel and
Recycling has begun a multi-million dollar upgrade of its Pocatello site in Idaho.
This investment centres around the installation of a 200-foot-long, 350 000-
pound Metso Stationary Shear to boost scrap processing capacity.

Sims Recycling Solutions
UK-based electronics recycling specialist Sims Recycling Solutions, a division of
global recycler Sims Metal Management Ltd, has opened the doors of its fi rst
electronics recycling and end-of-life IT asset management facility in the United
Arab Emirates (UAE). The new plant is located in Jebel Ali, Dubai, and is supported
by fellow Dubai e-waste company Akhdar FZCO. www.simsrecycling.com
MeWa
According to Germany-based recycling equipment manufacturer MeWa, around
800 refrigerators or 80 tonnes of electronic scrap will be recycled each day at
its newest installation in Niš, Serbia. The expansion by MeWa represents Serbia’s
fi rst such recycling facility and follows a new law that regulates the disposal of
refrigerators and electronic devices in accordance with the WEEE Directive of
the European Union. www.mewa-recycling.de/en
Anniversary animosity
A husband and wife quarrel bitterly on the day of
their 40th wedding anniversary. The husband yells:
‘When you die, I’m getting you a headstone that
reads “Here Lies My Wife – Cold As Ever”.’ ‘Yeah,’
she replies, ‘and when you die, I’m getting you a
headstone that reads “Here Lies My Husband – Stiff
At Last”.’
