price,’ Hall explains.
MotoArt usually has a team of three
or four workers on site, up on a lift
cutting away with heavy-duty equip-
ment. ‘Within a few days of work, we
can recover a truckload of fuselage
windows and fuselage skins.’
When it comes to ‘hard-to-find items’
such as vintage airframes, the studio
can pay upwards of thousands of dol-
lars. ‘We have a private scrap yard in
the Mojave Desert that stores about
10 000 airframes that we have collect-
ed throughout the years,’ Hall says.
They’ve been used to create desks,
conference tables, beds, display cases
– you name it. A popular feature is
ambient lighting, which is available in
many colour combinations. ‘To me,
the stabilisers at the rear of the plane
are the most impressive. They are thin
and aerodynamic. This makes them a
powerful design statement,’ Hall com-
ments with a smile. ‘But really, the
engineers who originally built the
planes are the true artists. We just put
our spin on it and make something fun
out of aircraft once they retire,’ he
modestly admits.
Believe it or not
Nearly 18 years later, MotoArt
employs 15 people, mostly designers
and engineers. The business is cater-
ing to large corporations with big
budgets for the one-of-a-kind pieces
made by Hall’s studio. Clients include
airlines such as Boeing, Airbus, and
Delta as well as tech companies
including Microsoft. The studio’s
designs have also been featured in
the US hit television programme
“Ripley’s Believe it or Not”.
MotoArt now has showrooms in
Australia, China and the Czech
Republic. These showrooms are
equipped with a fleet of carefully
restored historic aircraft and have
become museums for aviation fans
everywhere.

heathrow makes recycling PleDge
The UK’s biggest airport Heathrow is investigating the feasibility of recycling
its plastic waste streams for reuse in road surfacing. The idea is said to be
still in the research phase, with backing from various university partners,
ahead of the launch of a trial on its expansive premises in London.
The airport’s chief executive John Holland-Kaye has also reported that all
(roughly) 13.5 million disposable coffee cups sold and discarded at
Heathrow’s terminals will be recycled by the end of the year. This pledge is
part of the airport’s mission to reach an operational recycling rate of 70% by
2020.
Last year, Heathrow was ranked as the world’s seventh busiest airport, trans-
porting 75.7 million passengers.
