Kurt unveils new compactor briquettor
A new, front-loading 125-tonne
metal compactor briquettor has been
introduced by Kurt Manufacturing
of the USA. Known as the Chip-
munk Model 1200FL, the compactor
offers high output as well as a num-
ber of energy-efficient features, says
the company.
The Chipmunk delivers a com-
paction ratio of 8:1 and also reclaims
expensive cutting fluids. With an out-
put capacity of up to 1200 lb per hour
(544 kg) of aluminium chips (depend-
ing on chip geometry), the Chipmunk
compacts both ferrous and non-fer-
rous chips into dense 8.9 cm by 3.2 cm
briquettes. It can also compact
steel/ductile iron chips at a rate of up
to 2300 lb per hour (1043 kg).
The Chipmunk’s front-load design
utilises a hydraulically-driven infeed
auger which separates most unwant-
ed solids from the chips prior to the
compacting cycle. The system incor-
porates a mechanical kinetic energy
drive that, according to Kurt, makes
it extremely energy efficient. Com-
pared to a 50 HP hydraulically-dri-
ven compactor system, the Chip-
munk is said to use only a fraction of
the power and yet produces up to 50
000 PSI compaction force to convert
metalworking chips into dense, dry
pucks. These pucks are automatically
discharged via a chute into a contain-
er ready for shipment to the recycler.

Axsun upgrades plastics analyser
Axsun Technologies, a manufac-
turer of micro-optoelectronic spec-
trometers, has developed a new sam-
ple interface for the Anavo Analyzer
which it describes as ‘the fastest
hand-held NIR spectrometer on the
market’.
Based on Axsun’s advanced
MEMS-based spectrometer, the
rugged analyser is designed for ma-
terial identification applications
ranging from plastics compounding
and recycling to inspection of incom-
ing raw materials. The new, flexible
sampling interface is said to enable
the Anavo to measure materials in a
wider range of form factors as well
as non-contact measurements,
thereby providing the user with
greater flexibility.
At the heart of the Anavo is Ax-
sun’s micro-optical platform which
combines tunable laser technology
with wavelength and power calibra-
tion. On-board material libraries
and analysis software provide in-
stantaneous material identification
in the harshest industrial environ-
ments, it is claimed. An intuitive
user interface and easy-to-read LCD
screen are incorporated to simplify
operation for both technical and non-
technical users.

Caterpillar launches shear and grapples
Caterpillar has introduced a vari-
ety of new products aimed at the re-
cycling industry, including the
S365B hydraulic scrap metal shear
which can turn 360° both clockwise
and anti-clockwise. As a result, the
ideal cutting position can be ob-
tained without moving the machine,
according to the US-based company.
Caterpillar has also introduced
the GSH series of multi-blade grap-
ples designed to achieve maximum
productivity in applications such as
handling scrap metal, steel girders,
car wrecks, waste at recycling plants
and stone on building sites. Each
grapple is manufactured from
durable and wear-resistant materi-
als, and is equipped as standard
with a hydraulic rotator. The GSH
series is designed for excavators of
between 15 and 50 tonnes, and for
material handling machines of be-
tween 20 and 60 tonnes.
Meanwhile, Caterpillar has de-
signed the G300 B series grapple
specifically for demolition and recy-
cling tasks. According to the manufac-
turer, the closed-shell version is more
suitable for loading and unloading in
recycling applications because of its
smooth interior. The grapple has few-
er components than the average and
so is easy to maintain, it adds.

BPT Perculator for processing solid waste
Italian manufacturer Brevini
Power Transmission is a designer of
gearboxes specifically for the recy-
cling sector. Now the company has
developed a process for treating solid
waste known as the BTP Percolator.
The system comprises the follow-
ing process stages: mechanical treat-
ment; biological treatment with per-
colation; process water treatment;
gas recovery; and post-treatment.
In the biological treatment stage
of the process, the percolator – which
incorporates the S Series Brevini
gearbox – functions as a continuous-
ly operating, horizontal cylindrical
reactor with a hydraulic mixing sys-
tem and a hydraulic scraper. Organ-
ic waste remains in the percolator
for two days and is subsequently
washed using process water to elimi-
nate soluble matter.
Solid substances extracted from
the percolator are saturated with
water. Before fermentation, inert
minerals such as sand, gravel and
glass – and also fibres – are removed
via sedimentation and filtering. The
water used throughout process is fil-
tered while the collected biogas –
amounting to some 40-50 m3 per
tonne of waste – is usually sufficient
to run the entire system. It is also
used for heating the plant and dry-
ing treated waste.
