US consumers throw away almost 150 million mobile phones every year while no more than 20% get recycled, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. It’s a good reason to list which cities are the frontrunners when it comes to recycling smartphones.
Partner companies ecoATM and Gazelle report that they’ve diverted over 19 million devices from landfill through store trade-in programmes and special ‘Recycling ATMs’. Best Buy, SellCell and Back Market have also recycled, resold or refurbished ‘millions’ of phones – and tablets – in recent years. These four companies published a top 10 list of cities that account for the highest number of mobile phones and tablet trade-ins and recycling donations. Found out below which rank the highest.
It’s interesting to note that Chicago – a city with a population of over 2.8 million – is ranked in the top 10 for all four marketplaces. New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Orlando, Houston and San Francisco made the list twice.
