United States – Liberty Tire Recycling, the US reclaimer of around 1.5 billion pounds (approaching 700 000 tonnes) of rubber each year from more than 140 million used tyres, has appointed Thomas Womble as its new ceo.

He replaces Scott Whitney who was appointed ceo in June 2015 and who has received praise from chairman of the board Nils Larsen for ‘providing a steady hand during a time of change and adjustment for the company’.

Womble has been with Liberty since 2001 and has previously served as its coo, overseeing day-to-day operations at 28 manufacturing sites across eight regions throughout the USA and Canada. Womble’s deep industry experience and thorough knowledge of the company’s operations makes him the ‘perfect’ candidate to lead its next phase of growth, according to Larsen.

The rubber reclaimed by the Pittsburgh-based company becomes crumb rubber, industrial feedstock for moulded products, tyre-derived fuel, and mulch for landscaping and playgrounds.
