Subway restaurants adopt rPET trays

United States and Canada – The Subway restaurant chain has added to its sustainability credentials by introducing catering trays containing 95% recycled PET (rPET) derived from post-consumer soda and water bottles. The trays are being introduced in almost 29 000 outlets throughout the USA and Canada, the brand says.The move will prevent around 1.8 million pounds (816 million kg) of plastic materials from entering the waste stream annually, the company estimates. With Subway also having introduced salad bowls made of recycled plastic soda and water bottles in 2012, these two initiatives will jointly stop more than 4 million pounds (1.8 million kg) of plastic from being landfilled each year, the restaurant chain calculates.

Worldwide, Subway has made a commitment to look at every facet of day-to-day operations in order to make the brand’s restaurants more environmentally responsible, says marketing director Elizabeth Stewart.

But the company recognises there is more to be done. ‘We are committed to increasing our green efforts,’ it states. ‘With every new step, we are closer to our end goal of being able to show a significant difference in our overall footprint.’
