SIPA reinvents BPA bottle using PET

Italy – Italy-based processing technology company SIPA has created a PET version of the popular water cooler bottle in response to the fact that the original bisphenol A (BPA) type has been banned in many products across most of Europe for safety reasons.

The PET water cooler bottles are even lighter than their predecessors, states SIPA. In the case of a 690-gramme container with a polypropylene handle already on the market in the USA, SIPA has been able to reduce the total weight by 25 grammes. The Italian company has also substituted the handle material with 100% PET – an important development, it is argued, because it eliminates the need to separate the base and handle once the bottle reaches the end-of-life phase.

According to the plastics company, it designed the new bottle in light of interest from producers to market an alternative – even though there is not yet a legal requirement to do so. Though the product still has to be commercialised, SIPA trials have indicated that output rates of 250 bottles per hour are possible, equivalent to around three times as much as was achieved with polycarbonate bottles and thus saving significant costs.
