United States – The St Lawrence County Highway Department is relying on Struxure boards made out of 100% recycled plastic to complete repairs to the Dean Road Bridge in New York. ‘Green technology’ specialist Axion International Holdings supplied a quantity of 6-inch by 24-inch tongue-and-groove boards said to be equal to diverting 30 000 pounds of plastic from landfills. ‘It’s a good investment for us because Struxure is impervious to water and salt, so it doesn’t go through the wear and tear that traditional materials do over time,’ observes Toby Bogart, St Lawrence County’s superintendent of highways. Previous experiences with the sustainable material have shown that it is very durable despite the harsh weather conditions sometimes seen in upstate New York.
‘There is a tremendous need to maintain, restore and in many cases replace ageing bridge infrastructure in the US,’ notes Axion’s president and ceo Steve Silverman. Struxure bridges ‘outperform traditional materials’ because they won’t rust, splinter, crumble, rot or leach toxic chemicals into the environment, it is claimed.
Developed in conjunction with a team of scientists at New Jersey’s Rutgers University, use of this ‘next-generation building material’ means the construction is unaffected by marine parasites, graffiti and ultraviolet degradation.
