Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) has established a special group to promote dissolution recycling in the industry.
Dissolution recycling is a purification process through which polymers in plastic waste are separated out by solvents, allowing them to be recovered in a pure form without changing their chemical nature.
PRE’s Dissolution Taskforce reflects technological advancements in the industry and following collaboration with the non-profit Dissolution Recycling of Plastics Initiative (Drop-In). The two main goals are to shape policies that enhance the recognition of dissolution recycling and to ensure a level playing field among all recycling technologies.
Technology recognition
Jim Armstrong, PRE board member and chair of the taskforce, says it is ‘a great addition’ to the scope of work of PRE. ‘We are confident it will translate into the broad recognition of dissolution recycling and its potential.’
TheTaskforce aims to promote the potential of the flexible physical technology to offer both environmental and economic advantages while supporting a circular plastics economy alongside mechanical and chemical recycling.
Companies engaged in dissolution recycling are being encouraged to join the initiative to share their expertise and contribute to supporting a circular future for plastics.
PRE represents a sector responsible for over EUR 9.1 billion in turnover, 13.2 million tonnes of installed recycling capacity, around 850 recycling facilities and more than 30 000 employees.
