Asia – Boyan Slat, founder of Ocean Cleanup, has announced that the world’s first system to passively remove plastic pollution from the world’s oceans will be deployed in 2016 off the coast of Tsushima – an island located in the waters between Japan and South Korea.
The system’s wide-spread arms for collecting the plastics will span 2000 metres – which would make this the longest floating structure of its kind ever deployed in the ocean, it is believed. It will be operational for at least two years, catching plastic pollution before it reaches the shores of Tsushima. The deployment is claimed to represent ‘an important milestone’ in Ocean Cleanup’s mission.
Within five years, after a series of deployments of increasing scale, the team plans to install a 100 km-long system to clean up half of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch between the US states of Hawaii and California. It is not yet clear whether the collected ocean plastics will be recycled or used as a source for energy.
