Italy – Italian design company Wallcovering Pubblicità is combining visual flair with good environmental management with its use of recycled PVC, originating from cable ducts, as the main raw material in street sign poles now gracing the streets of Milan.
The all-plastics ‘sustainable billboards’ are produced in a sophisticated extrusion-injection process, TrialSystem, which eliminates the need for bolts and screws, said Wallcovering CEO Davide Noti. The triangular housing enables the poles to be customised on each side to function as an advertising or sponsorship medium. They also incorporate wireless technology, allowing communication with the public in the form of safety messages, for example.
‘For the past 35 years, we’ve been actively looking for functional solutions for urban terrain. I believe TrialSystem is a great example of a contemporary kind of eco-design that satisfies two key needs of contemporary urban habitats: communication and respect for the environment,’ Mr Noti said.
The latter consideration embraces both the products’ aesthetic qualities, sitting ‘in harmony with their surroundings’, and the green materials from which they are fabricated, he commented.
The industrial integrity of the TrialSystem initiative was recognised back in 2010, when it was nominated for the SolVin Award for Innovation in PVC.
