Taiwan/France – The Taiwan-based Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation has entered into partnership with the French textile recycler Le Relais with the aim of increasing the collection of unwanted clothing. The Foundation wants to see a sustainable society and has pledged to mobilise its extensive ‘Paris network’ to raise additional awareness of recycling in the French capital.
Emmanuel Pilloy, President of Le Relais, and Yao He-chiung, Vice President of Tzu Chi Foundation’s French arm, formally signed the cooperation agreement at a recycling facility in Ploisy. Both men expressed the wish to work closely together to promote recycling and create jobs.
Le Relais owns 13 000 recycling bins across France and collects roughly 80 000 tonnes of textiles, shoes and household goods per year, making it the country’s largest recycler. However, there are currently only a few recycling bins in the Paris area.
Mr Pilloy approached Tzu Chi in the hoping that a collaboration with the Buddhist organisation with might breathe new life into a long-established scheme, and the outcome was positive. Stating that he had great respect for Le Relais, Mr Yao said his organisation would make it a priority to boost Paris’s collection capacity by asking its many local members to promote the cause.
Ploisy, one of Le Relais’ 28 locations, employs 75 and recycles around 4000 tonnes of clothing annually. For more information, visit: www.tw.tzuchi.org/en
