South Africa – South Africa has opened its first beverage carton recycling plant, in the city of Germiston near Johannesburg, thanks to a joint effort between Tetra Pak and Gayatri Paper Mills.
Tetra Pak claims that less than 60% of the 1.19 million tonnes of paper produced each year in the country is recycled. Rodney Reynders, the company’s South Africa Environmental Manager, said resource depletion was an imperative business challenge of global proportions and underlined the need to reduce waste.
Mr Reynders added that Tetra Pak was ‘bullish’ about its growth potential in sub-Saharan Africa. The company produced 2.8 billion packages for the regional market last year, and he predicted this would increase to a record total of 3.1 billion this year. The company has joined South Africa’s Paper Manufacturers Association.
