United States – US paper and packaging company Pratt Paper/Pratt Industries has announced plans to build a US$ 260 million recycling facility in Valparaiso, Indiana, with operations scheduled to begin by 2018.
The new 250 000-square-foot plant will produce roughly 360 000 tons of recycled paper per year. To be erected next to Pratt’s existing box-making business, the mill will also include a wastewater pre-treatment facility. Some 137 jobs are to be created and the workforce will be hired by the end of next year.
A total of US$ 16.4 million of financial support was provided by the Northern Indiana Public Service Company, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority.
Pratt was founded in 1987 and recycles some 1.15 million tonnes of paper a year in the manufacture of packaging for the industrial, food/beverage, electronics, pharmaceuticals and telecommunications sectors. The recycler claims to be ‘the fifth-largest corrugated packaging company in the USA’ and ‘the world’s largest privately-held company to produce all of its paper and packaging from 100% recycled products’.
