South Korea – Global aluminium processor Novelis has officially opened a new aluminium can casting and recycling centre at its facility in Yeongju, South Korea. The new operation, at what is now claimed to be the largest aluminium can plant in Asia, is part of a long-term US$ 400 million expansion programme in the country, Novelis has commented.
Used aluminium beverage cans and other aluminium scrap will be processed at the Yeongju site for re-melting and casting into sheet ingot. The new facility will have an annual capacity of 265 000 tonnes, pushing the company’s total consumption of recycled aluminium beyond 1.4 million tonnes per year.
‘With our aggressive expansion plans, we are well positioned to meet the rising demand for rolled aluminium,’ says Shashi Maudgal, President of Novelis Asia. The company labelled Asia as the ‘the world’s fastest growing market for rolled aluminium’ for beverage cans, cars and consumer electronics.
Novelis has informed other significant recycling projects were underway in Brazil and Germany, along with ‘additional investments worldwide’.
