New plant to boost Novelis’ role as can recycler

Germany – Major aluminium producer Novelis has successfully cast the first production-sized ingot at its new facility at Nachterstedt in Germany. The plant will process beverage cans and numerous other forms of aluminium scrap from across Continental Europe.

The Euro 200 million facility, claimed to be the largest of its kind in the world, will produce 400 000 tonnes per year of aluminium sheet ingot from recycled material. According to the company, the new centre will support Novelis’ drive to increase its recycling activity in Europe where it plays a major role in the recycling of used beverage cans.

Construction work at the Nachterstedt facility began in March last year; the first equipment was installed a half-year later, followed recently by the official opening.
