Multi-million recycling upgrade for Novelis at Oswego

United States – Global aluminium rolling and recycling specialist Novelis has announced the completion of a US$ 48 million investment in its automotive scrap aluminium recycling facility at Oswego in New York state, USA. Over the past five years, therefore, the group has invested more than US$ 400 million in its Oswego operations.

The investment includes an 81 000-square-foot building for the processing, sorting and storing of automotive scrap aluminium, as well as infrastructure improvements such as road and parking upgrades to handle increased truck traffic. At the site, Novelis will now be able to process up to 10 000 tonnes of recycled scrap per month.

′One of our top priorities is to create a sustainable supply line between Novelis and automakers, which will preserve the aluminum′s value, reduce greenhouse gases and increase economic efficiencies for our customers,′ comments Marco Palmieri, senior vice president of Novelis and president of Novelis North America. ′This investment will help us meet new demands of automakers as they turn towards lightweight aluminum to create more fuel-efficient vehicles.′

Novelis expects sales of automotive aluminium, which currently account for around 9% of its total shipments, to lay claim to up to 25% of shipments by 2020. To support the growing demand for automotive aluminium, Novelis is to allocate approximately 80% of the Oswego facility′s capacity to the automotive market.
