Japanese car recyclers fear export increase

Asia – Japanese car recyclers are concerned that an increase in exports of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) will result in a decline in supply to the domestic market.

In the past eight years, the number of old cars accepted under Japan’s Automobile Recycling Law has surpassed 30 million units – ‘a milestone’, says the Japan Automobile Recycling Promotion Center.

However, some major players such as car dealers and repair factories are increasingly taking old cars to auctions where many of the vehicles sold are likely to be exported. As a result, there could be a decline in ELVs coming forward to the domestic market, warns the car recyclers’ body.
