Hydro to take over aluminium scrap sorting frontrunner

Germany – Aluminium producer Hydro of Norway is to take over WMR Recycling, based in Dormagen, Germany. This facility is claimed to have ‘€˜advanced’€™ aluminium scrap sorting technology as it uses x-ray transmission and several other sorting technology elements.

The facility has the capacity to sort 36 000 tonnes of aluminium scrap per year. Material processed at the plant will supply Hydro’s recycling plants in Europe with shredded and sorted post-consumer aluminum scrap. Following completion of the deal, Hydro’s used beverage can recycling facility in Neuss, Germany, will share the technology from the WMR plant, and will optimise the Neuss plant for closed loop recycling of cans.

According to Hydro, WMR’s operations will prove beneficial for the company as ‘efficient sorting’ will grow in importance. In 2014, Hydro recycled close to 1.1 million tonnes of aluminium.
