Finland – Boliden AB is incorporating a silver recovery process into its Kokkola zinc smelting operation in Finland. Depending on the content of the raw material, this will result in the recovery of around 25 tonnes of silver per annum.
According to Jarmo Herronen, General Manager of Boliden Kokkola, the silver content of zinc concentrates has gradually increased over the years. ‘This new process and the investment are, therefore, of great importance for the Kokkola zinc smelter, and will improve both the profitability and the raw material efficiency.’
The new addition will be fully integrated into the existing zinc production process and is meant to produce silver concentrate, which is a commercial intermediate product. The installation project is set to start this April, with production scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2014. A total of Euro 27 million has been invested so far.
With its current production capacity of 310 000 tonnes per year, Boliden Kokkola is the second largest zinc smelter in Europe and the sixth largest in the world.
