United States – American ferrous scrap exports recovered to 1.295 million tonnes in August after a disappointing July in which barely 850 000 tonnes left US shores. However, the year-to-date export total fell by more than 9% to 7.975 million tonnes from the 8.801 million tonnes recorded for January-August 2015, according to latest Commerce Department data.
When combining the figures for the first eight months of the year, Turkey was US scrap exporters’ leading customer on 2.033 million tonnes despite the fact that this total was some 431 000 tonnes or 17.5% short of that for January-August 2015.
Making the same comparison, Mexico booked 966 334 tonnes for a year-on-year increase of almost 44% and Taiwan was in third position in the US scrap export league table despite cutting its order by more than 35% to 892 854 tonnes.
In fourth place came India with a 24% leap in US scrap purchases to 727 118 tonnes.
