Singapore’s milestone in metal recovery

Asia – Singapore’s first metal recovery facility was inaugurated on December 1 as part of the government’s strategy to become a ‘Zero Waste Nation’. Operations commenced at the REMEX Metal Recovery Facility last July and have already resulted in a 10% weight reduction when incinerating bottom ash.

The unit processes 1800 tonnes of ash per day, with approaching 14 000 tonnes of metal recovered to date. Considerably less waste is being landfilled as a result of the facility coming on stream – an important plus, it is noted, given that Singapore’s only landfill is expected to run out of space by 2035.

The opening of REMEX Metal Recovery Facility represents a ‘milestone’ for Singapore as well as a ‘critical component’ of the government’s long-term vision detailed in the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint 2015, the inauguration ceremony was told by Masagos Zulkifli, minister for the environment and water resources.
