Plane crash claims life of leading recycler

Germany – Johannes Gondert, owner and ceo of leading German ferrous recycler the Theo Steil Group, has died in a plane crash along with his wife and both pilots.

The plane came down near Gondert’s home town of Trier in the Moselle valley after apparently hitting an electricity pole while attempting to land in thick fog.

Gondert was very active within BDSV, the confederation of German steel recyclers. His company has also been a Gold Member of the BIR world recycling organisation for many years. BIR has expressed its ‘deep shock’ at the news, adding that Gondert was a highly-respected figure within not only the German but also the international recycling community.
