Germany – Owing to weakened market demand in Germany, Metso has announced comprehensive restructuring plans for its metal recycling operation in Düsseldorf. The proposed measures are also part of the company’s global programme to improve ‘operational excellence’ and reduce costs.
′The target of the restructuring is to be able to offer high-quality metal recycling products at competitive prices in the future,′ Metso says.
The main measures are the closure of the production site and a general reorganisation in Düsseldorf. Metso envisages that about half of the employees at its Düsseldorf location could be affected by the changes.
According to Steen Toennes, senior vice president of Metso′s recycling business unit, the plans are ′very unfortunate′ yet ′inevitable′ to secure operations and competitiveness in the current ′extremely challenging market situation′. He adds: ′The previous adjustments initiated in Düsseldorf were unfortunately not sufficient enough, and in the changing market conditions we need to realign our strategy.′
Discussions with employee representatives will start immediately in order to ′create trust and certainty between all parties involved′ and to make personnel reductions as socially acceptable as possible, Toennes states. He expects ′no changes′ in the customer interface at present.
