Slovenia – Use of scrap to produce stainless steel offers substantial environmental benefits over the nickel pig iron route, it was contended at Metal Bulletin’s latest stainless steel conference, held in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana.
The carbon footprint of nickel units procured from scrap is 22 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per 100 000 tonnes of nickel produced as compared to 212 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide for every 100 000 tonnes of nickel obtained from a primary production process, argued Paul Gielen, sales director at stainless scrap trader Cronimet.
According to a report from MB, leading analyst Markus Moll of Austria-based Steel & Metals Market Research insisted to conference delegates that scrap ‘is the best way to produce stainless steel from a sustainability point of view’ and that Europe’s politicians ‘must promote this idea’.
There is firm evidence, he added, that some major end users are already demanding stainless steel that is not produced via the nickel pig iron route.
