In anticipation of the European Commission’s strategic dialogue on the future of Europe’s steel industry on 4 March, Germany’s steel recyclers federation BDSV has emphasised the critical role of recycled steel in transforming the steel sector and advancing climate protection.

The European Commission’s intention is to develop its steel and metals action plan to ensure the competitiveness of the European steel industry. Initiatives focus on promoting circular value creation, decarbonisation, electrification and fair trade conditions, all of which are seen as crucial for the industry’s structural evolution.

Positive impact

BDSV director Claudia Conrads underlines the importance of steel scrap in the industry’s transformation. ‘The positive impact of using steel scrap in steel production must be fully harnessed within these initiatives,’ she says. At the same time, Conrads points out that free global trade in steel scrap must be maintained. ‘Open markets and international trade routes are essential to preventing market distortions and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the European and German steel recycling sector.’
