Europe: steel packaging recycling exceeds 70%

Belgium – The Belgium-based Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging (APEAL) has revealed that 71% of all post-consumer steel packaging in Europe was recycled in 2010.

The research, which was reviewed and confirmed by UK energy and waste specialist Eunomia, is said to show that steel remains the most recycled packaging material, comparing favourably with plastics (30%), beverage cartons (34%) and glass (68%).

The steel packaging industry is still some way short of its 2020 objective of 80% recycling. However, some countries are already exceeding this threshold, including Germany on 94% and Belgium on 98%.
