Changing of the guard at Dutch metal recyclers body

Hans Koning is stepping down as director of Dutch metal recycling body MRF. On 1 January he will hand over to Lennert Vermaat.

Koning announced his retirement in Gorinchem, where the broad Dutch recycling scene had gathered for the annual Dutch Recycling Trade Fair.

He has been at the helm of MRF for 16 years. Former MRF chairman Gabriël van Seumeren praised him for his ‘unbridled efforts’, adding ‘We certainly did not always agree with each other but I’ve always greatly appreciated your deep involvement.’

Driven young man

The MRF board and members voted unanimously for Vermaat to take over next year. He has been working as an adviser to the metal recycling association since 2021 and it was Koning who took Vermaat to MRF. ‘I knew him through the Dutch Battery Fire Task Force and saw a driven, knowledgeable young man who also happens to be a connector,’ he says.

Facing regulatory pressure

In a short speech, the incoming MRF leader indicated he was looking forward to the new challenge. ‘It’s a great industry to work for but at the same time an industry that is constantly challenged by new developments. Just look at the massive regulation coming from Brussels and its impact on the sector.’
