State of the art facility can process half of Hong Kong’s electronics

Asia – Claimed to be Hong Kong’€™s first modern electronics recycling plant, the new Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Treatment and Recycling Facility (WEEETRF) is close to completion.

The facility, which will be operated by the ALBA Group, is located in the Tuen Mun EcoPark and will have the annual capacity to handle up to 30 000 tonnes of e-scrap with the potential to expand. According to ALBA, the facility will have an 85% recovery rate. The latest processing technology will be used to handle hazardous materials such as mercury, lead from cathode ray tubes and refrigerants.

Per year, some 70 000 tonnes of used electronics is disposed of in Hong Kong of which roughly 80% is sent to facilities across Asia (mainly China) and Africa for further processing.

Once operational, the new facility and collection hub is believed to serve as a model for the electronics recycling industry in Hong Kong and other regions that continue to face criticism for questionable environmental practices.
