Spain – The European Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is being breached on a massive scale in Spain, according to a report due to be released shortly by the country’s environmental prosecutor.
The document is said to allege that non-compliance is ‘systematic’.
Based on investigations in 2010, fraud is said to be taking place at all levels of the WEEE collection and treatment chain, and across the entire territory. Sixty scrap merchants, among others, were charged in relation to various breaches of the law following an investigation in Madrid last year, according to the report. The waste was either dumped, exported illegally or sent to unauthorised sites to be dismantled and sold as spare parts on the black market, it says.
