United Kingdom – Refind Technologies of Sweden is to build an automatic battery sorting system for WasteCare, co-owner of BatteryBack, a major compliance scheme for household batteries in the UK. The installation will enable WasteCare to sort more than 3000 tonnes of batteries annually, including 2400 tonnes automatically.
It will be the third such system in the UK ′which means the vast majority of the consumer batteries in the country soon will be sorted automatically′, states Refind managing director Hans Eric Melin. The latest system will be installed at a new facility in Halifax, northern England.
Battery packs, cell phone batteries and button cells will be removed mechanically and sorted by hand while all cylindrical and 9-volt batteries will be sorted automatically. The system can handle 600-900 kg per hour.
Batteries are recognised by their visual characteristics and are then separated by air ejectors at a speed of more than 10 batteries per second, according to Refind.
