United States – US-based multi-national telecommunications corporation AT&T has claimed a new Guinness World Record for recycling wireless devices. Its customers recycled 50 942 mobile phones in a single week in September, thus diverting 11.363 tonnes from landfill.
Customers in Texas recycled over 12% of the phones, or 5879 devices, with California a close second on 4916 units. According to AT&T, the retailer with the highest independent score is located in Virginia, with a total of 108 devices donated in the seven-day time-frame.
AT&T Mobility Senior Vice President Jeff Bradley states: ‘We know that there are millions of wireless devices in people’s homes that are not being recycled, so it is our goal that one day all wireless customers will trade in or recycle their wireless devices when they buy new ones.’
