Spain – Spanish firm Indumetal Recycling (IR) plans to improve the recycling rate of discarded electronic products by reprocessing the plastics residue.
IR, based in Bilbao, received a grant from the regional Basque government to launch a research project that will ultimately result in plastic pellet production under the Induplast brand. The pellets will be supplied to injection moulders for production of new parts.
The company promises technical innovations that will increase the efficiency of its recycling plant in Asua, improving productivity and reducing the processing cost and energy consumption. Key to this is the quality of separation, enabling plastics to be re-used rather than going to landfill or for energy generation, it emphasised.
IR currently recycles between 65% and 85% of the weight of WEEE. The company has an in-house R&D team and said it will also collaborate as necessary with other technology centres with their own areas of scientific expertise to help increase WEEE recovery.
