Ninth Canadian province to collect e-scrap

Canada – The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador has launched a recycling programme for used electronics, making it the ninth of Canada’s 10 provinces so to do.

The programme is an initiative of the Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA), a group led by industry stakeholders, in collaboration with the Canadian government. ‘The launch of a provincial electronic products recycling programme is a testament to our government’s commitment to work with the industry to establish long-term waste management solutions that will help achieve our 50% goal of waste reduction,’ says the Canadian minister of environment and conservation Tom Hedderson.

On a yearly basis, an estimated 2600 tonnes of electronic waste is generated throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. While residents will not be charged for the service, an ‘environmental handling fee’ will be tacked on to new electronics purchases to cover the cost of the programme.
