India – Cerebra Integrated Technologies, one of India’s leading electronic waste recyclers, has kick-started the country’s largest e-waste initiative with a mobile shredding system.
The company is working in collaboration with Singapore-based Cimelia Resource Recovery, which operates several electronic recycling plants worldwide and supplied Cerebra with the truck-mountable shredder.
The first phase of Cerebra’s e-waste recycling facility in Bangalore involves crushing printed circuit boards. These will be sent to Singapore for further processing.
Cerebra claims its e-waste facility, which will be fully operational by September, will be able to handle 90 000 tonnes of e-waste per year. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including precious metals such as platinum, gold and silver, will be extracted initially. In a later phase of operation, plastics will also be removed for conversion into fuel.
According to a UNEP report, the volume of e-waste arising from disposal of mobile phones and computers could increase by as much as 500 per cent over the next decade in developing economies such as India. In the Bangalore area alone, 30,000 computers a year are now discarded, generating about 70,000 tonnes of e-waste.
