China – China Electronics Enterprises Association (CEEA) has appointed Li Tong Enviro Tech Co. Ltd – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Li Tong Group – as the sole official recycler of end-of-life mobile phones across China.
Li Tong has been selected to serve as the pilot company for the Comprehensive Use of Used Mobile Phones Scheme, which was initiated by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the CEEA in order to develop, implement and manage a reverse supply chain to recycle China’s discarded handsets. The pilot project is also part of the country’s overall strategy to achieve a recycling target of 95% by 2015 under its 12th Five-Year Plan.
According to Li Tong, its 20 000-square-metre plant at Jiangmen will be the end-of-life treatment base and will be able to process around 30 000 tonnes of electronic scrap per year. Additional services – such as collection, data wiping, component recovery and disassembly – will also be managed by the recycler.
Recycling options and carbon reduction have become prime concerns for a great number of manufacturers, remarks Li Tong Group’s Managing Director Tony Wang. He believes the pilot scheme will provide ‘very meaningful data’ which will help stakeholders in the private and public sectors to improve waste reduction, handling strategies and the design stage of electronics and electrics.
