Call for help to boost US phone recycling

United States – The US Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) and non-profit organisation Jason Learning have launched a nationwide awareness contest in order to help boost the collection and recycling of old mobile phones.

High school students, artists and film-makers are being invited to create an original poster or video in the style of a public service announcement in order to help educate the public of the importance of recycling phones instead of throwing them away.

‘This contest will educate children, and parents, about the opportunity and importance of properly recycling cell phones, thus helping to increase the volume of recycling within the USA,’ says ISRI’s president Robin Wiener.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 25% of the household electronics available for recycling in the USA are actually collected for this purpose, with the remainder stored in the home or sent to landfill.
