Apple e-scrap to be collected at company stores

United States – Apple has launched a plan to collect its own used products at company stores.

In co-operation with third-party firms like PowerON, Apple hands out gift cards for iOS devices that are in sufficiently good condition to be resold on the open market. The latest collection initiative extends to any Apple product brought into one of the company’s retail stores. While Apple will not be offering gift cards in exchange for older products with little or no resale value, free-of-charge recycling is said to keep electronics out of landfills.

The collect programme is seen as another step by the computer and smartphone giant towards a cleaner business model. Already, some 94% of the energy used by its data centres and corporate campuses comes from renewable sources such as solar and wind.

‘What the company wants to do is use all our innovation and all of our expertise to make the planet more secure and make the environment better,’ states Apple’s vice president of environmental initiatives Lisa Jackson.
