United States – The global e-scrap collection services market is likely to grow more than 14% during the period from 2012 to 2016, according to a report published by business specialist Infiniti Research.
The rise in e-scrap collection initiatives around the world has contributed largely to this upturn in collected volumes while there has been ‘a considerable increase’ in government policies to boost e-waste collection services. However, the unwanted accumulation of electronic devices ‘could pose a challenge’ to the growth of this market, the report stresses.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the United Nations Environment Programme have formulated rules and regulations to encourage the reuse and recycling of e-scrap in the USA. The producer responsibility approach has been introduced in all US states except California, while it is mandatory for electronic product manufacturers to pay for the recycling process.
Around 24 states in the USA have passed mandatory legislation for e-scrap management and recycling.
