French car industry boosts electric vehicle recycling

Europe – French battery recycling company SNAM and automotive major PSA Peugeot Citroën have launched a joint programme to ensure batteries from the group’s end-of-life electric and hybrid vehicles are properly recycled across its network and production sites in Europe.

SNAM will be responsible for collecting and recycling high voltage industrial batteries (nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion) from the Peugeot and Citroën networks of accredited auto repair shops and dealerships in Europe.

SNAM is able to recycle up to 80% of the weight of this type of battery, thus ‘far exceeding’ the 50% minimum target for recycling efficiency set by European regulations. PSA Peugeot Citroën sold 3 million vehicles worldwide in 2014, recording sales of Euro 54 billion.
