USA | A VVZ-250 Hurricane Primary Waste Reducer – an advanced dual-shaft shredder design from Vecoplan – is up and running at C&D Recycling in Chicago, Illinois. The Hurricane has been processing construction & demolition waste for the last 6 months. Singing his new shredder’s praises, Larry Hirsh, Plant Operations Director at C&D Recycling, states: ’Even with our big Cat diesel track shovel running full bore, we simply can’€™t feed the Hurricane as fast as it can chew it up and spit it out. On an average day we process 350 to 400 tons of debris, sometimes 500 tons, and we’€™re still only running at about 30% of the shredder’€™s capacity.’€™
Hurricane shredders feature twin cutting rotors, each with a dedicated drive motor. ‘€˜While hydraulic motors are available, C&D Recycling opted to invest in a machine featuring Vecoplan’€™s patented, energy saving and performance enhancing, HiTorc electro-magnetic pulse drive motors,’€™ says Chris Hawn, Director of Business Development in Vecoplan’€™s Waste Division. ‘€˜Energy savings was the main reason we went with the HiTorc drives,’€™ adds Mr Hirsh. ‘€˜When the machine’€™s running idle, the HiTorc motors only draw about 9 amps each ‘€’ that’€™s comparable to a hair dryer, and with soaring energy prices, we figure the return on investment on our machine will be cut by 50% or more with the addition of the HiTorc motors.’€™
Other features on the Hurricane include: hydraulic aggregates with high torque pumps, encased in sound enclosures; a centre anvil with a replaceable, hard faced counter knife and removable screen grates for consistent particle output size; built-in tramp metal protection to minimise downtime; and hydraulically operated double-wing drop-down doors for easy access to the cutting chamber. ‘€˜In demolition there are often hidden treasures in the rubble you’€™re shredding. With the Hurricane, you just stop the machine, push a button, the doors open, and you have instant access to remove whatever it is. Then, with the push of a couple more buttons, you’€™re up and shredding again,’€™ states Mr Hirsh.
Elaborating further on the shredder’€™s features, Mr. Hawn explains: ‘€˜The Hurricane’€™s exclusive Closed Rotor design sets it apart from the open disc, segmented rotor designs found on conventional counter-rotating twin-shaft shredders, in both performance and durability, but more importantly in ease and speed of maintenance. Plus each of the Hurricane’€™s dual rotors is equipped with quick-fix bolt on cutters that eliminate the need for welding when replacing worn teeth. This cuts routine maintenance time, from days and hours – down to minutes. Access to all wear items is fast and simple, without the need for disassembly.’€™
